Orange Oil Termite Treatment in Los Angeles
Is Orange Oil Right for Your Drywood Termite Infestation?
Orange oil may be suitable when an infestation is confined to accessible wood, but an inspection should determine whether a localized approach fits the conditions. At Top Termite Co. Inc., we evaluate the termite species, affected areas, and access before preparing a report and coordinating recommended work through trusted subcontractors.
We’ve focused on termite inspections since 1993. Our licensed and certified inspectors bring over 30 years of inspection experience to properties throughout Los Angeles and the South Bay. We serve homeowners, real estate agents, and property managers.
Southern California’s warm, dry conditions allow drywood termite colonies to thrive. Unlike termites that depend on soil contact, drywood termites live and feed inside wood, so visible evidence may represent only part of an infestation.

How D-Limonene Applications Work
Orange oil contains d-limonene, a compound derived from citrus peels. A treatment provider injects it into infested wood, where it kills termites through direct contact. The provider must be able to access and drill the wood so the material reaches the colony.
This is a targeted rather than structural approach. California Structural Pest Control Board guidance allows local applications when an infestation is limited to a small area. Suitability depends on whether inspectors can identify and reach its full extent.
Limits of Targeted Orange Oil Applications
Orange oil doesn’t move throughout an entire building or reliably reach colonies hidden in inaccessible wall voids, enclosed attic framing, or other wood that can’t be directly accessed. Undetected colonies outside the treated area may remain unaffected.
Several factors determine whether this approach is appropriate:
- Target termite species: Orange oil is intended for drywood species, not subterranean termites.
- Infestation distribution: A limited, identifiable area may support direct treatment, while colonies across multiple inaccessible areas may require another recommendation.
- Property access: The infested wood must be available for drilling and application.
- Occupancy: Occupants generally don’t need to vacate the structure for an orange oil application.
Orange Oil vs. Whole-Structure Fumigation
The central difference is reach. Orange oil is applied to specific accessible areas, while whole-structure fumigation uses gas that permeates the structure and reaches termites in inaccessible wood. Fumigation requires people, pets, and plants to be removed before the gas is applied.
Our inspection findings establish whether an infestation appears confined to accessible areas or extends beyond them. We document those findings and coordinate the recommended service with a trusted subcontractor.

Our Los Angeles Termite Inspection Process
We begin by assessing the property for termite evidence and conditions that affect treatment access. Same-day and emergency assessments are available when a property owner needs a timely evaluation.
Our recommendations account for the termite species, the distribution and accessibility of affected areas, and the property owner’s goals. We then prepare a report that documents our findings and recommends next steps based on the observed scope of the infestation.
Our inspection-to-recommendation process includes:
- Inspecting the property for termite evidence and affected wood.
- Identifying whether drywood or subterranean termites are present.
- Determining whether affected areas are accessible for direct treatment.
- Preparing a report with findings and recommended next steps.
- Coordinating treatment, structural fumigation, or repairs through trusted subcontractors when recommended.
We handle the inspection and reporting, while our subcontractor network performs any recommended treatment, fumigation, or repair work. This provides one coordinated path from the initial assessment through the work identified in the report.
